CAMARILLO : Man Held in Slaying of Younger Brother

A dispute between two brothers late Monday left the younger man dead of a gunshot wound to the chest and the elder held on suspicion of murder in the Ventura County Jail, authorities said Tuesday.

Dead is Tracey Duane Waggoner, 34, of Camarillo. Officers found him unconscious with a gunshot wound to the chest about 11:10 p.m. Monday outside the home where he lived with his parents in the 100 block of Cartegena Street, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said. Emergency crews rushed Waggoner to Pleasant Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His brother, Randy Waggoner, 37, also of Camarillo, was arrested about 4 a.m. Tuesday near Victorville, where he had apparently fled to see a girlfriend, said Sheriff’s Cmdr. William Wade. Waggoner was transported back to Ventura, where he is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail.

The alleged murder is Camarillo’s first this year, Wade said.

Investigators believe the two brothers had spent most of Monday evening drinking and arguing. About 11 p.m., Tracey Waggoner confronted his older brother outside their parents’ home as Randy punctured his car tires with a knife, investigators said.

Police suspect Randy Waggoner fired a single shot from a small-caliber rifle at his younger brother from close range. Leaving his brother lying on the sidewalk, Randy Waggoner drove off, investigators said.

He was taken into custody in San Bernardino County without incident.
