THOUSAND OAKS : NAACP Sponsors School on Saturdays
Students willing to devote extra time to academics will begin their studies today at a Saturday school sponsored by the local chapter of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People.
“We try to give children of color an enhanced education that they might not get in their public or private schools,†said Ben Mallard, co-director of the Simi Valley-Moorpark-Conejo Valley NAACP’s Saturday School.
Students in the program meet every Saturday on the campus of Cal Lutheran University to study subjects including computers, African American studies, math and SAT preparation. All the teachers are volunteers.
The program is open to all local students in kindergarten through grade 12 regardless of their academic record or race, Mallard said.
