Motorcyclist From Westminster Dies in Freeway Crash
LOS ANGELES — A Westminster motorcyclist was struck by several vehicles and killed in Thursday morning traffic on the San Diego Freeway in Westchester.
Michael Riley, 27, was traveling north near the La Tijera exit about 8:10 a.m. between a red sedan and a big rig hauling a fuel tank trailer, California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Burch said.
Officials said Riley apparently was in the No. 2 lane when he tried to pass traffic that was moving about 15 m.p.h. Riley was riding close to a left wheel of the sedan, officers said, when its driver turned to the left to change lanes and hit Riley, throwing him off his motorcycle.
Riley landed in the third traffic lane where the rear wheels of the truck’s trailer ran over him.
“The driver of the tanker was not aware that the collision had occurred,†Burch said. Riley’s birthday would have been today.
Authorities said the investigation is continuing and that other vehicles may have been involved in the accident.
