COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA : It’s Fien; No, McNown; No, Well, Both
- Share via
Faced with a choice between Ryan Fien, a junior who waited three years for the starting job but has struggled since getting it, and freshman Cade McNown, who has shown great promise along with anticipated inconsistency, Coach Terry Donahue is willing, at least at this point, to go with a two-quarterback system.
As of Wednesday night, Donahue still wasn’t ready to name a starter for Saturday’s game against Fresno State. He said Fien had looked better in practice on Monday and Tuesday, but Donahue was impressed with McNown’s performance on Wednesday.
“Whoever starts,” Donahue said, “has a clear understanding that, as long as the offense is functioning properly and we’re moving the ball and scoring, it’s fine, but I reserve the right to make a change.”

Right tackle Chad Overhauser, who pinched a nerve in his neck in last week’s game against Washington State, is doubtful for Saturday. Senior Mike Rohme would replace him.
