Ventura city fire officials evacuated about 55 workers from a Gold Coast Recycling center in east Ventura on Wednesday morning after an employee discovered what appeared to be several sticks of dynamite.

The employee unearthed a tin can filled with about a dozen crumbling cylinders while sifting through trash at the recycling center on Colt Street about 9:30 a.m., fire officials said.

The Ventura County sheriff’s bomb squad, which was called to evaluate the find, arrived on the scene about two hours later and judged the suspect materials to be non-hazardous.

The “dynamite†turned out to be exactly what its container said it was: tubes of pellets used for welding, officials said.

The pellets were disposed of by the bomb squad. There were no injuries.

“You can never be too cautious because you never know what people put in their trash,†said Kevin Rennie of the Fire Department. “We’ve found grenades before.â€
