LA HABRA : Trash Collection Fees to Rise $3.91 a Month

Residents soon will be paying $3.91 more each month for trash collection.
City Council members are blaming the increase on Orange County, which increased its landfill fees by 54% to compensate for funds lost in the Dec. 6 bankruptcy.
The county began billing trash haulers its new landfill fee in July, and trash haulers across the county have been passing along the increase to the cities they serve.
La Habra’s monthly trash fee will rise to $14.47, 24 cents less than the county average, City Manager Jerry L. Bankston said.
Council members said they also expect to raise trash-hauling fees for commercial property owners.
Mayor Juan M. Garcia expressed sympathy for the low-income senior citizens who must pay the fee.
“I really feel for the seniors in this community,” he said. “We, as council members, have no choice.”
City officials said they have not yet set the date when the new fees take effect but expect to do so soon.
