Four-Star Films : ‘Foreign Correspondent’

This Alfred Hitchcock spy thriller, released in 1940 and set on the dawn of the U.S. entrance into World War II, mixes social conscience with the mood and pace of “The 39 Steps.” It’s one of Hitchcock’s most inventive works, a great favorite of French director Jean Renoir. Starring Joel McCrea and Laraine Day (both pictured), Herbert Marshall, George Sanders and Robert Benchley, who also collaborated on the dialogue with James Hilton (AMC Monday at 9 a.m.).
