ROUNDUP : Glendale Transfer Pays Immediate Dividends in Cross-Country Victory

Ramon Serratos and Jose Padilla finished first and second to pace the Glendale College men’s cross-country team to a runaway victory Friday in the Oiler Invitational at Kenneth Hahn Park in West Los Angeles.

Glendale totaled 24 points to win the invitational for the second year in a row. Mt. San Antonio finished second with 58 points, followed by Pasadena City with 83.

Serratos timed 22 minutes 42 seconds over the four-mile course. He had finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for College of the Canyons in the State track championships in June before transferring to Glendale.

Padilla was second in 22:44, followed by teammates Jose Arias (23:07), Eduardo Macias (23:25) and David Gomez (23:45) in fifth, seventh and ninth.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal State Northridge 0, Cal State Dominguez Hills 0--The Matadors and Toros played to an overtime tie at North Campus Stadium.

In its second overtime match of the season, Northridge (2-2-1) controlled much of the play. The Matadors outshot Dominguez Hills, 17-6, and their shots hit the crossbar and posts several times.

Matador sophomore goalie Kim Kuhn of Chatsworth High made four saves. Brandy Kaake stopped six shots for the Toros.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Southwest Missouri State d. CS Northridge, 15-11, 15-11, 15-5--Carrie Kapfenberg had 14 assists and 10 digs, and Crystal Newquist added 13 kills and 11 digs, but the Matadors dropped the round-robin match in the Idaho tournament.

The loss was a school-record seventh in a row for Northridge (1-10). The Matadors play Oral Roberts and Idaho today.

Heather Hofmans had 34 assists and eight digs for the Matadors, who posted their third highest hitting percentage (.171) of the season.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Buckley d. Baptist Christian 15-0, 15-2, 15-5--Stephanie Juhos and Kelly Fogel each had seven aces for Buckley (3-1) at home.

Viewpoint d. South Bay Lutheran 15-0, 15-6, 15-2--Starr Silver had eight aces as the defending Heritage League champions won at South Bay.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Calabasas 21, Notre Dame 9--The Coyotes used an 11-goal barrage in the fourth quarter to break open a nonleague match at Calabasas. Jamey Krauss and Eyal Feldman each scored three times during the run.

Notre Dame had kept the match within reach at 10-6 after three periods but tired in the end. Reid Roberts of Calabasas led all scorers with five goals, including two in the fourth.

Harvard-Westlake 12, Righetti 4--Brett Hool and Albert Won each scored four goals, and goalie Vahe Aharonian had 11 saves for Harvard-Westlake (3-0) in the quarterfinals of the Millikan tournament.

Burroughs 14, La Canada 6--Tom Patterson scored three goals for La Canada at Burroughs.

Royal 23, Servite 9--Bill Bruininga scored five goals, and Kris Kunkel and Chris Richeson each added four goals as Royal (4-0) advanced to today’s semifinals at the Riverside Poly tournament.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Louisville 11, Simi Valley 7--Freshman Katie Gallant won all three of her singles matches to improve to 13-2 this season for the Royals (2-3) in a nonleague match at Simi Valley.

Chaminade 13, Royal 5--Freshman Teresa Galido won all three of her singles sets to spark the Eagles (2-0) past Royal (2-2) in a nonleague match at Cal State Northridge.

The Chaminade doubles team of Asha Viswanathan and Nicole Young swept its three sets.
