Los Alamitos began its pursuit of the mythical national high school football championship Thursday night with a 44-0 victory over Saugus before about 3,000 at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.
The Griffins--The Times’ No. 1 team who last season had a Southern Section 47-game unbeaten streak snapped by eventual Division I champion Mater Dei--dazzled the Centurions with their passing game. Senior quarterback Kevin Feterik completed 14 of 19 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns before leaving with 10:35 remaining.
Feterik’s wide receivers, Tony Hartley and Stan Guyness, each made with big plays. On the Griffins’ second play from scrimmage, Guyness caught a 20-yard pass at the 40, split the two remaining defenders and turned it into an 80-yard touchdown.
Hartley’s key moment came in the third quarter when he completed a 54-yard pass play by diving into the end zone, putting the game out of reach at 31-0.
