French Deputy, Stevens Winners at Belmont

NEW YORK — French Deputy, a lightly raced chestnut from California, beat Mr. Greeley by four lengths Monday in the 127th running of the $200,000 Jerome Handicap for 3-year-olds at Belmont Park.
French Deputy, ridden by Gary Stevens, covered a mile on a fast track in 1:33 2/5 and paid $5.10, $3 and $2.10. Mr. Greeley, ridden by Julie Krone, returned $2.90 and $2.10 and Top Account paid $2.10 to show.
Reserved through the first six furlongs, French Deputy closed strongly in the middle of the track to remain undefeated in four career starts.
