COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Northridge Falls Twice in Volleyball

After suffering a tough four-game loss earlier in the day, Cal State Northridge was swept Saturday by Idaho in its final match of the University of San Francisco women’s volleyball tournament.

The 15-7, 15-7, 15-10 setback to the Vandals left the Matadors (1-5) with a 1-3 record in the five-team tournament and a fourth-place finish.

Northridge, which has only one starter remaining from last year’s team that posted a 23-8 record, had a lowly .028 hitting percentage against Idaho (3-1). It was the fourth time this season that the Matadors have hit below .100.

Freshman Carrie Kapfenberg had eight kills and 11 digs against Idaho, but no other Northridge player had more than four kills.

The Matadors outhit San Francisco in the first game, .209 to .135, but 17 service errors and 10 receiving errors were costly in a 18-16, 7-15, 18-16, 15-12 loss.

Kapfenberg had 20 kills and 12 digs and freshman Holli Hansen added 19 kills and 15 digs for the Matadors.

Crystal Newquist, another freshman, had 11 kills and nine total blocks against the Dons.

Pepperdine d. Arkansas, 15-2, 15-7, 15-10--Ann Windes and Nicole Sanderson each had 13 kills for the Waves, who tied Arkansas for first place in the Houston tournament.

Pepperdine and the Razorbacks finished with 3-1 records in the season-opening, five-team competition.

The Waves split two matches Friday, then swept Houston (15-11, 15-8, 15-11) and Arkansas on Saturday.

Pepperdine’s attack was keyed by its outside hitters, with Windes collecting 19 kills and Sanderson adding 12 against Houston.

MEN’S SOCCER

California 2, CS Northridge 1--Keith West scored an unassisted goal at the 27-minute mark of the first half, but the Matadors did not score again in their season-opening nonconference match at Berkeley.

Jeramie Perez’s goal gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the match and Jason Young scored 17 minutes later to extend the lead to 2-0.

Cal had 15 shots on goal to Northridge’s nine.

The Master’s 4, Pt. Loma Nazarene 1--Stephen Janho’s second-half goal helped the Mustangs send the match into overtime.

Lucas Principe, Bryan Lee and Mark Ruhlman each scored for host Master’s (2-0) in the extra period.

Mustang goalie Kris Bage had five saves.

Colorado College 5, Cal Lutheran 0--The Kingsmen (0-2) were outshot, 23-9, in the nonconference match at Colorado.

Colorado College (1-0) led, 1-0, at halftime, before overpowering Cal Lutheran in the second half.

The Kingsmen have lost their first two games.
