COULDA BEEN: President Clinton is winding up the longest vacation of his term--in Wyoming (A22). . . . A few years ago, many thought Summerland was about to become the Western White House. But the Clintons visited producer pals Harry Thomason and Linda Bloodworth-Thomason only once, in November, 1992. . . . Although no official reason was offered for the Clintons’ lack of a repeat visit to the community north of Ventura, a White House aide speculated at the time that they were gun-shy because of the publicity they generated by having show-biz friends.

ON THE MOVE: On this day in 1926, Ventura County supervisors accepted a plot plan for Hollywood-by-the-Sea. . . . The community, which was gutted in the early 1960s when the county dredged the Channel Islands Harbor, still exists, but it could someday be annexed into Oxnard or Port Hueneme. That option is one the Channel Islands Beach Community Services District is evaluating, said district Manager Gerard Kapuscik. . . . A report is due by the end of the year.

LIVE POETS SOCIETY: Ron Reichick of Simi Valley was one of about a dozen poets who turned out Wednesday afternoon to help a Thousand Oaks man keep the Poetry Shop open (B1). . . . Reichick, who publishes a magazine called Verve, admitted that “the last place you would expect to find an international literary magazine is probably Simi Valley. But poetry transcends.”

WORD OF WARNING: Claudia Goldner of Oxnard takes her membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars seriously. . . . So Goldner, who served as an air-traffic controller in Vietnam and now is an adjutant for the VFW, was upset when she heard that men were going house-to-house in Oxnard and Port Hueneme, flashing VFW identification and asking for money. . . . “The national policy of the VFW forbids door-to-door solicitation,” Goldner said. “These people are getting ripped off.”
