Mark Butterfield was named the starting quarterback for Stanford’s season opener at San Jose State on Saturday, according to Coach Tyrone Willingham.

Butterfield, a senior, has thrown only 51 career passes, spending much of his college career watching quarterback Steve Stenstrom from the sidelines.

Butterfield and redshirt sophomore Tim Carey had been competing during preseason practice for the starter’s job, which was vacated after last season when Stenstrom graduated. Freshman quarterback Chad Hutchinson also showed promise.

Nebraska wingback Riley Washington, facing a charge of attempted murder, returned to practice Monday.

“By university standards, Riley Washington is eligible to go to class and he has rejoined the team on the practice field,” Coach Tom Osborne said in a statement. “He is, by law, innocent until proven guilty and that is our stance, also. He will not play in a game until I am absolutely satisfied that he is innocent.”

Nebraska officials also are frustrated that the NCAA still hasn’t decided whether star running back Lawrence Phillips can play against Oklahoma State in the opener Thursday night. The NCAA has been reviewing Phillips’ relationship with a sports agent.

Missouri receiver Rahsetnu Jenkins was bound over for trial Monday after a judge ruled there was sufficient evidence to show a woman had been raped. The ruling means Jenkins probably won’t be on the field this season. Coach Larry Smith earlier said it’s team policy to automatically suspend any player accused of a serious offense.

Boise State quarterback Tony Hilde was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with several misdemeanors after scuffling with two police officers in a Boise park.

Boise police say Hilde, a junior from Pendleton, Ore., was walking through Camels Back Park in North Boise about 1 a.m., when police asked him for some identification. Hilde began running and an officer caught him.

Hilde is charged with being in a park after dark, which is against a city ordinance. He also is charged with resisting and obstructing officers and with two counts of battery of an officer.

Oregon’s starting offensive guard, 350-pound Tasi Malepeai, was not injured as seriously as first thought in the Ducks’ final preseason football scrimmage Friday.

Malepeai experienced no swelling after what was thought to be a season-ending knee injury.

He was able to walk with the aid of crutches over the weekend and the possibility now exists he might play in the season opener Saturday night at Utah.
