New Toll-Free Number: Long-distance companies are set to bombard businesses and consumers with advertising designed to let them know they’ll soon be able to make toll-free calls by dialing 1-888. The Federal Communications Commission has allocated 888 numbers because the last of the toll-free 800 numbers will be used up in February. As a result, companies led by AT&T; Corp. and MCI Communications Corp. will try to tell the public that 888 is toll-free and can be used in lieu of 800.
