BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Tigers Acquire Nevin From Astros
The Detroit Tigers acquired former Cal State Fullerton star Phil Nevin, the No. 1 selection in the June 1992 free-agent draft, from Houston to complete the trade last week that sent reliever Mike Henneman to the Astros.
Nevin, 24, suffering from a muscle pull in his side, has been assigned to triple-A Toledo.
In 62 games for triple-A Tucson, Ariz., Nevin batted .291 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs. In 18 games with the Astros, he batted .117 with no homers and one RBI.

Vince Coleman, the speedy outfielder who lost his job with the Kansas City Royals when they decided to bring up several youngsters, was traded to the Seattle Mariners for a player to be identified later. The 33-year-old played 75 games for Kansas City, hitting .287 with four home runs, 20 RBIs and 26 stolen bases.

Philadelphia pitcher Curt Schilling and outfielder Tony Longmire will be sidelined the rest of the season because of injuries.
Schilling needs arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder and Longmire broke his left wrist diving for a base hit while playing left field in an Aug. 6 game in Cincinnati. X-rays taken Monday revealed the fracture.

Boston Red Sox pitcher Aaron Sele, on the disabled list because of tendinitis in his right shoulder, is scheduled to make a rehabilitation start at triple-A Pawtucket, R.I., on Thursday and then rejoin the Red Sox. . . . Pittsburgh Pirate reliever Jim Gott will undergo surgery on his pitching shoulder Thursday and will be sidelined for the rest of the season.
