NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Gant, Reds Add to Rockies’ Woes

Ron Gant homered and drove in three runs as the Cincinnati Reds ended a four-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over fading Colorado on Monday night at Cincinnati.

Gant had a run-scoring groundout and a two-run homer, his 24th, to lead the Reds. Dave Burba (7-2) held Colorado’s slumping lineup to five singles over six innings.

Reliever Mike Jackson gave up one single in two innings, and Jeff Brantley gave up two singles in the ninth.

The Rockies have fallen out of first place in the National League West by losing six of seven on their current trip and nine of 13 overall.

Atlanta 4, Florida 3--David Justice hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, lifting the Braves at Atlanta and ending the Marlins’ winning streak at six.

The victory was Atlanta’s 21st in its last at-bat and 14th since July 4. The Marlins lost for only the third time in 17 games.

Justice hit a 3-2 pitch over the center-field fence off Yorkis Perez (1-4), his 16th homer. Greg McMichael (6-1) pitched the final two innings for the Braves, who overcame the loss of scheduled starter Greg Maddux. The four-time All-Star fell ill with flu-like symptoms before the game, and rookie Matt Murray made his first major league start.

Montreal 5, Philadelphia 1--Moises Alou hit a two-run homer at Philadelphia, sparking the Expos to their sixth victory in seven games on the road and into second place in the National League East.

San Francisco 4, St. Louis 1--Royce Clayton singled in the winning run in the Giants’ three-run eighth and William VanLandingham gave up four hits in eight innings at San Francisco.

With the game tied, 1-1, with one out in the eighth, Barry Bonds doubled to left off Donovan Osborne (0-5) and Glenallen Hill was intentionally walked. Mark Carreon grounded into a fielder’s choice to force Bonds at third and Clayton followed with a single to right to score Hill.

San Diego 6, Pittsburgh 5--Steve Finley singled home the winning run with two out in the eighth inning as the Padres wasted a five-run lead but still won at San Diego.

Archi Cianfrocco and Brad Ausmus drew consecutive walks in the eighth off Jason Christiansen (1-3). One out later, Finley singled off Dan Plesac to score Cianfrocco.

The game drew only 9,242 fans.
