Faxon, Maggert Play Way Onto U.S. Ryder Cup Team
Two foreign golfers played off for the PGA Championship on Sunday, but two of the American losers left Riviera with big smiles.
Jeff Maggert, who finished tied for third, and Brad Faxon, who finished fifth after a final-round 63, scored enough Ryder Cup points to qualify for the U.S. team that will play the Europeans on Sept. 22-24 at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.
Ten members of the 12-player team were selected by points through the PGA Championship. The other two will be selected today by Lanny Wadkins, captain of the U.S. team.
The 10 selectees, in order of points: Corey Pavin, Tom Lehman, Davis Love III and Phil Mickelson, all of whom missed the cut in the PGA, followed by Jay Haas, Maggert, Loren Roberts, Ben Crenshaw, Peter Jacobsen and Faxon.
Knocked from the top 10 on the final day were Mark Calcavecchia, who missed the cut, and Kenny Perry, who tied for 49th.
Among those being considered by Wadkins are Fred Couples, Lee Janzen, Jim Gallagher Jr., Payne Stewart and Perry.
