*** Chris Knox, “Songs of You & Me,” Caroline. Knox has spent more than a decade etching his scruffy “Beatle-oid” pop out of various extremely low-tech instruments. The New Zealander’s latest effort yields some surprisingly intense results. “Chemicals Are Our Friends” actually achieves a lo-fi industrial sound, and “One Fell Swoop” is a blissful post-punk doo-wop interlude. Knox’s idiosyncratic charm abounds, even when the tunes are too clever for their own good.
