OXNARD : U. S. Keeps Colonia Pool Afloat in 1996
Oxnard has won a $16,000 federal grant to keep the Colonia swimming pool open next summer.
The pool was closed for several years because of a lack of funding, until private fund-raising efforts enabled the city to open the pool for the summer three years ago. The city also landed a federal grant in 1994 to operate the facility from June 19 to Aug. 25 this year.
The pool, at 170 N. Juanita Ave. in La Colonia, offers free swimming lessons for children three days a week. This summer, swimmers can use the pool Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
Lifeguard Joe Jacquez said more than 100 swimmers use the pool daily. He said the grant will help keep children off the streets.
“I think it’s super for the kids,” Jacquez said. “They will have something to look forward to in the summer months.”
