Liability Lawsuit Awards Drop for 3rd Consecutive Year
Civil liability lawsuit awards against the city of Los Angeles dropped to $21.9 million in the past fiscal year, the third year in a row such improvements have been reported, City Atty. James Hahn said Thursday.
Hahn credited the better record to a “damned fine bunch of attorneys” in his civil liability section and to his 1991 decision to reorganize his department to deal with an explosion in the city’s liability costs that peaked in the 1990-91 fiscal year at $39.2 million.
The 1991 reorganization plan created a special unit of attorneys and investigators to handle major lawsuits involving charges of police abuse.
