San Gabriel Valley : Just in Time for School: Anti-Truancy Law

Note to loitering youths in San Gabriel: Get ready to tell it to the judge.
Under an anti-truancy law that takes effect next month, police officers will be able to cite 12- to 17-year-old students who are caught unsupervised from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on school days. Students who get citations will have to appear in Juvenile Traffic Court with a parent or guardian and will be subject to fines of $135 or 27 hours of community service.
San Gabriel’s ordinance was patterned after Monrovia’s anti-truancy, which was passed last year and is believed to be the first in the country.
