Dwight Gooden’s agent says the drug-troubled former Cy Young Award winner is ready to return to baseball, and hopes the commissioner’s office agrees. Bill Goodstein said he is “trying to get the machinery in order” to apply later this week to have his client’s latest drug-related suspension lifted in hopes of Gooden pitching in the major leagues before the month ends. . . . Chicago White Sox Manager Terry Bevington dropped the appeal of his four-game suspension for fighting with Milwaukee Manager Phil Garner during a game July 22, the American League announced. . . . The Cleveland Indians have sold out all 30 of their remaining home games, marking the first time in the franchise’s 95-year history that the club has sold out its inventory of tickets before the end of a season. . . . The Mets recalled right-hander Reid Cornelius from triple-A Norfolk to take the roster spot of Bret Saberhagen, who was traded to Colorado on Monday night. Cornelius was 7-0 with a 0.90 ERA in 10 games with Norfolk.
