PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : NFC : J.J. Stokes Endures a Tough First Day

Wide receiver J.J. Stokes had his first serious training camp practice and it was brutal.

Dragging in the heat of Rocklin, Calif., and taking a beating during contact drills, the San Francisco 49ers’ top draft pick struggled to keep up with the workout tempo of his teammates. At one point, Coach George Seifert yelled at Stokes to pick it up.

“It’s nice to get one under my belt. I wouldn’t say it was a good practice for me, though,” Stokes said. “Once the coaches get on you, you know you’re not having a good day.”

Stokes, UCLA’s career receptions leader, missed the first two weeks of camp. He signed a seven-year, $8.4-million contract last Thursday.

The Green Bay Packers’ hope of replenishing their receiving corps suddenly looked more promising Monday when Mark Ingram arrived in training camp.

Ingram has snubbed the Packers since they acquired him from the Miami Dolphins in the offseason.

Coach Mike Holmgren said last week that Ingram would be fined $4,000 a day for missing training camp.

The Packers are looking for receivers, having let star receiver Sterling Sharpe go after a serious neck injury. They gave a tryout Thursday to Webster Slaughter, a two-time Pro Bowl selection.

The Packers’ highest-paid receiver is Robert Brooks, who signed a three-year contract in May for $3.9 million.

Scott Gragg, the big rookie offensive tackle who was the New York Giants’ second-round draft choice, broke his right foot and will be sidelined four to six weeks.

Gragg, 6 feet 8 and 316 pounds, suffered the injury while running sprints after Saturday’s scrimmage.

Gragg, who never missed a game or a practice while playing at the University of Montana, had been the primary backup to Doug Riesenberg at right tackle in camp.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed free agent tight end Clarence Williams.

Williams was a seventh-round draft choice by Denver in 1993 after playing at Washington State.

After being released by the Broncos, Williams played in seven games for the Cleveland Browns in 1993, catching one pass for 14 yards.

Williams was a training camp cut by Seattle last year.
