BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Davis Incident Under Review
The American League is reviewing the incident in which designated hitter Chili Davis poked a County Stadium fan in the face during Sunday’s game between the Angels and Milwaukee Brewers.
But Dr. Gene A. Budig, league president, is out of the office until Thursday, so a decision on any punitive action would not be made until the end of the week, a league spokesman said.
League officials had conversations with the Angels and Milwaukee Sheriff’s Department officials Monday “to find out what really happened,” said Joseph Fitzgerald, AL assistant media affairs director.
Davis, fed up with the taunting of a fan while he was in the on-deck circle during the fourth inning, shoved his finger into the fan’s face and was later charged with disorderly conduct. He received a citation that carries a $287 fine.
The fan has been identified as Andy Johannsen, 26, who said he was yelling at Davis but wasn’t saying anything demeaning or derogatory.
“I may have shouted, ‘You stink. You’re an easy out. You’re going to strike out,’ but nothing demeaning or derogatory, nothing personal,” Johannsen told the Associated Press. Johannsen added that he was considering pursuing charges against Davis.
