Suspect in Assault May Have Drowned in Escape
Manhattan Beach police kept up the search Monday for a man who may have drowned in the Pacific Ocean after trying to rape a woman near a bike path.
“At this point, it’s just a matter of waiting to see if a body washes up on shore,” said county Lifeguard Scot Linkletter, who assisted in the search.
The suspect knocked a 42-year-old woman off a bicycle about 10 p.m. Sunday near 27th Street. She struggled and screamed for help and two men came to her aid, said Sgt. Dave Ferguson of the Manhattan Beach Police Department.
“One witness chased the suspect south on the bicycle path and onto the beach where the suspect . . . ran into the water and swam out [of sight],” Ferguson said.
The woman suffered minor injuries.
