Boy, 4, Pulled From Pool Is Hospitalized in Critical Condition
GARDEN GROVE — A 4-year-old was in critical condition Thursday after wandering from his grandmother’s house where he had been napping and falling into her swimming pool.
The boy and his younger sister were visiting from Arizona, police said. Their grandmother had put them down for a nap about 2 p.m., but when she checked on them about 2:35, the boy was gone.
She searched and saw him lying at the bottom of the pool, police said.
A 26-year-old neighbor in the 10100 block of Traylor Way heard the grandmother screaming and retrieved the boy from the pool before police or paramedics arrived, Garden Grove Lt. John Woods said.
Two police officers tried to revive the boy, who was not breathing and had no pulse, authorities said.
Paramedics took him to Garden Grove Medical Center, where he was placed on a respirator. He was later transferred to Children’s Hospital of Orange County.
The boy’s name was being withheld pending his parents’ arrival.
Garden Grove Police Sgt. Gary Walker said the back yard is fenced but the pool is not. However, the grandmother told police she “made a special effort to go around and lock the doors when she put the kids down for a nap.â€.
