Three robbers escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash from a Simi Valley credit union Monday morning after handcuffing customers and clerks, police said.
The robbers, who wore masks and carried handguns, brought several pairs of handcuffs with them, Simi Valley Police Lt. Tony Harper said. When police arrived at the Ventura County Federal Credit Union on Tapo Canyon Road, they used keys to remove the handcuffs, Harper said.
One customer was assaulted by the suspects and suffered minor ankle injuries, said Harper, who did not release the man’s name. The customer was treated at Simi Valley Hospital, Harper said.
The thieves apparently arrived about 11:20 a.m. in an older model four-door sedan stolen from the San Fernando Valley, which they left at the credit union. They escaped in a small blue car, Harper said. No shots were fired, police said.
Police used dogs and a Sheriff’s Department helicopter team to search for the robbers. They also went house to house, knocking on doors in the nearby residential neighborhood. The robbers were still at large late Monday afternoon, however.
Harper said an investigation will continue with the assistance of the FBI.
