Los Angeles has recouped slightly more than $1 million in losses from a worker’s compensation fraud scheme uncovered last year.
The recovery of $1,084,061, in the form of a payment from the city’s insurer, resulted from a suit the city filed against Thelma Bowman, City Atty. James K. Hahn said Friday.
Bowman was a senior supervisor in the Personnel Department’s Worker’s Compensation Department during a period in 1993 and 1994 when disability funds were funneled to nonexistent city employees and payments were made to physicians and investigators for services they did not perform, Hahn said.
When the fraud ring was uncovered, Bowman was placed on leave pending the outcome of the case.
