Cleveland Indian pitcher Orel Hershiser has been put on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 22 because of a lower back sprain, the team announced Friday. The Indians recalled right-hander Albie Lopez from triple-A Buffalo to fill Hershiser’s spot in the rotation.

Former Angel Joe Magrane signed a minor-league contract with the Montreal Expos. Magrane will report to triple-A Ottawa of the International League. . . . The Houston Astros put pitcher John Hudek on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right elbow. . . . St. Louis Cardinal second baseman Geronimo Pena went on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season because of a hamstring injury. The Cardinals also announced that left-hander Danny Jackson will return to the rotation and pitch Tuesday at Houston. . . . The Cincinnati Reds optioned right-hander John Roper to triple-A Indianapolis and activated left-handed reliever Chuck McElroy from the disabled list. . . . Milwaukee pitcher Cal Eldred will sit out the rest of the season after undergoing three hours of surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow.
