World IN BRIEF : VIETNAM : Christopher Said to Back Full Relations

Secretary of State Warren Christopher has recommended to President Clinton that the United States establish formal diplomatic relations with Vietnam, according to Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). The former Vietnam War prisoner of war said he and Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-Neb.) will offer a “sense of the Senate†resolution in July approving the step. The resolution would help provide political cover for the Administration if and when it moves to improve relations with the former U.S. enemy.
