* I eagerly read your article on Japanese gardens (June 5) fully expecting to find a glowing description of Sho Fu En (Pine Wind Garden), the beautiful interior Japanese garden at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. Alas, there was no mention of this 13,000-square-foot oasis of tranquillity designed by Takeo Uesugi.

The garden was a gift, valued at $330,000, from Epson America Inc., to the people of Torrance and the South Bay. It was dedicated, along with the Cultural Arts Center, in October of 1991. It is located in the Torrance Civic Center at Torrance Boulevard and Madrona Avenue.

Art and dance workshops and the lobby of the 500-seat James Armstrong Theater all open onto the garden with its streams, waterfalls and diverse and lush plantings.
