NEWPORT BEACH : Monte Vista Benefit Being Rescheduled

An event planned to raise scholarship money for students graduating from Monte Vista High School, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s independent study program, has been postponed for lack of community support.
The “Lucky Ducky Water Wipeout” and Family Spirit Day was scheduled for June 3 at the Monte Vista campus, but not enough “ducks” were sold at $5 each to make the event a success, said Bonnie Engstrom, spokeswoman for the school’s Parent Teacher Student Assn.
“A lot of parents are working. A lot of parents don’t feel the same about our school as they do about the comprehensive high schools. They really don’t understand what we offer here,” Engstrom said.
The event has been rescheduled for June 24, and the association is trying to persuade merchants on Newport Boulevard between 17th and 18th streets in Costa Mesa to let the organization have the event there.
Organizers also planned a phone-athon this week to draw support.
Each $5 donation adopts a “duck,’ a yellow ball with a number on it, to compete with other balls tumbling down a watercourse provided by Hydrabaths of Santa Ana.
To adopt a duck or donate a prize, call Engstrom at (714) 640-1788.
