Coast Guard Offers Tips for Boating Safety
- Share via
Memorial Day weekend is traditionally one of the busiest times on the state’s waterways as recreational boaters take to the ocean and California’s lakes and rivers.
This week is National Safe Boating Week and to that end the U. S. Coast Guard has issued the following safety tips to ensure a safe outing:
* Before heading out, make sure all necessary safety equipment is aboard. A new law requires all boats to carry as many life jackets as there are people on board.
* Always wear a life jacket when water-skiing. Have someone other than the driver keep an eye on the skier. Maintain a safe speed and check to make sure the towline is in good shape before setting out.
* Don’t drink and drive.
* Follow basic boating guidelines: Know the proper rights of way, keep an eye out for traffic and obey the speed limits.
