Curfew Calls Halt to Kashmir Protests

SRINAGAR, India — Police fired tear gas Friday at small groups of protesters who defied a ban on anti-government demonstrations over the destruction of a 15th-Century Muslim mosque.
The government imposed a 24-hour curfew on Srinagar to block the demonstration, which had been called by Muslim political leaders to protest the destruction of the shrine at Char-e-sharif, a pilgrimage town 20 miles away.
The shrine to the patron saint of Jammu-Kashmir state burned to the ground during a three-day battle a week earlier between Indian troops and Muslim separatists.
About 30 people were killed. Both sides have accused the other of starting the blaze.
