Helen Nix; Active in Southland Charities

Helen Ryons Nix, one of Los Angeles’ leading volunteer workers until her move to San Diego County in 1965 and after that an active supporter and fund-raiser at Scripps Memorial Hospital, has died at her La Quinta home.
The widow of presiding Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Lloyd S. Nix was 87 and died May 12.
Throughout her life she devoted tens of thousands of hours to such diverse Southern California institutions as the Neighborhood Youth Assn., Southern California Symphony Assn., United Way, Junior League, American Red Cross, the Woman’s Committee of (Los Angeles) Philharmonic Orchestra, Hospital of the Good Samaritan and the Braille Institute.
Her honors included being named a Woman of Dedication by the Salvation Army in San Diego in 1980 and a Los Angeles Times Woman of the Year in 1965.
She is survived by a daughter, two stepchildren, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
