Msgr. John Dunne Dies at 92

NEWPORT BEACH — Msgr. John Dunne, retired pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, died Sunday at 92.
A native of Ireland, Dunne attended St. Patrick’s Seminary in County Tipperary, where he was ordained for the Diocese of Los Angeles in 1927.
Upon arrival in California, he became assistant pastor of St. Agatha Church in Los Angeles. He later attended Catholic University in Washington, where he was designated editor of the Tidings, a Catholic periodical, from 1931 to 1942.
He was promoted to domestic prelate in 1964.
Dunne worked in parishes including St. Mark’s in Venice, St. Theresa’s in Los Angeles, St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s in Wilmington and St. Elizabeth’s in Altadena.
In 1962, he was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, where he served until April, 1976. He remained pastor emeritus until 1989. Since then, he has lived in Nazareth House in Los Angeles.
A memorial Mass is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 1441 W. Balboa Blvd., in Newport Beach.
