DOWNTOWN : Owners Advocate Tax to Improve Garment District
A majority of Downtown garment district property owners are willing to pay extra taxes in order to start a revitalization effort in the area, a local association has announced.
Nearly 60% of the property owners in the 56-block Los Angeles garment district have signed a petition to form a Business Improvement District, according to Stanley Hirsh, chairman of the Downtown Property Owners Assn.
If the district is approved by the Los Angeles City Council, the property owners would pay an additional assessment on their property tax bills.
“The success of the campaign indicates that people with investments in garment district properties and businesses have recognized the time has finally come for the private sector to lead the way to revitalize Downtown,†Hirsh said Thursday.
The money collected would be earmarked for additional security, maintenance and marketing services for the area, Hirsh said.
