Ex-Maryland Lobbyist Is Sentenced and Fined

BALTIMORE — Maryland’s former top lobbyist was sentenced to six months of work release for overbilling clients and funneling the money to political candidates.
Bruce Bereano also was fined $20,000 during Friday’s sentencing hearing and ordered to perform 500 hours of community service. His lawyers immediately appealed, and U.S. District Judge William Nickerson suspended the sentence pending the outcome.
A federal jury convicted Bereano in November of seven counts of mail fraud for falsely billing four clients for about $16,000 in “legislative entertainment expenses” from May, 1990, to June, 1991.
