TUSTIN : Chamber of Commerce Opposes Measure R
Directors of the Tustin Chamber of Commerce are recommending that Orange County residents vote “no” on Measure R, the proposed half-cent sales tax hike.
The measure will appear on the June 27 ballot.
Thomas P. Brennan, chamber executive manager, said a majority of the 13-member chamber board believes that a sales tax increase would harm the county business climate, and should be considered only as a “last resort.”
Brennan said board members are concerned that generating revenue through a tax hike would take the pressure off county officials and discourage them from downsizing and restructuring local government efforts in the wake of the county’s Dec. 6 bankruptcy.
“It was seen as the easy way out--go back to the taxpayers and grab some bucks, and continue to do business as usual,” he said.
