Missing Surfer Is Identified

A Glendale man who authorities believe drowned off Venice when his Boogie board was upset by a wave was identified Monday as Lance Dawkins, 36, the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported.
Dawkins was drifting in the water with a friend a few hundred feet offshore Saturday evening when they encountered strong rip currents. County lifeguards were able to rescue the other man, but Dawkins was lost, according to a spokesman for the county’s Lifeguard Division.
Dawkins was at the beach with friends and his 2-year-old daughter, family members said.
Strong winds hampered rescue divers’ efforts Sunday, but about a dozen divers resumed the search Monday in the murky waters.
