Raiders Sign Veteran Free-Agent Cornerback
Free-agent cornerback Najee Mustafaa, the former Reggie Rutland, signed with the Raiders, the team announced Tuesday.
Mustafaa, 30, has played seven seasons in the NFL, six with the Minnesota Vikings and one with the Cleveland Browns. He sat out last year. He has 11 career interceptions, including one that resulted in a 97-yard touchdown return against the Rams in 1991, the longest interception return in Viking history.

The Rams, in need of a cornerback to replace jailed Darryl Henley, have reached a contract agreement with Anthony Parker, a starter for the Vikings last season.
The team has also come to terms with Johnny Bailey, the Rams’ leading receiver last season with 58 catches.

The Chicago Bears traded defensive end Trace Armstrong to the Miami Dolphins for second- and third-round draft picks.

The Vikings signed free agent offensive tackle Rick Cunningham to a one-year contract worth about $500,000.
Cunningham, a 6-foot-7, 320-pound lineman, had been a key member of the Arizona Cardinals’ front line before Joe Bugel was fired as coach and replaced by Buddy Ryan last season.
Tennis
Bryan Shelton upset defending champion and eighth-seeded Carlos Costa of Spain, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), in the Estoril Open in Lisbon, Portugal.
Glenn Bassett will be hired as the men’s tennis coach at Pepperdine, the school announced. He replaces Allen Fox, who will resign at the end of this season.
Bassett, who has been a volunteer assistant coach for the Waves during the past two seasons, won seven national championships and compiled a 592-92-2 record as UCLA coach from 1967-93.
Basketball
Magic Johnson scored 28 points and led his team to a 116-58 victory over Japan’s national team in the opener of a four-game series in Osaka. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who is also on the team, scored 13 points. Johnson and Abdul-Jabbar hadn’t played together in six years.
Miscellany
Mike Tyson will be an analyst on the pay-per-view telecast of the five world championship fights at Caesars Palace on Saturday night, but his comments will be pretaped. . . . The U.S. national volleyball team beat China in five games to win the third match of a seven-match Asian tour. Dexter Rogers had 45 kills to lead the U.S. squad to an 11-15, 15-11, 17-16, 12-15, 15-13 victory, its first victory of the tour. . . . CFL commissioner Larry Smith said time had run out on a deal that would have moved the Las Vegas Posse to Jackson, Miss. So Smith suspended the financially ailing franchise for the coming season.
