HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Homer Goes a Long Way Toward Taft Victory

Ryan Long’s three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning carried Taft High to a 7-4 victory Thursday afternoon in a Northwest Valley Conference game at San Fernando.

Danny Rodriguez had tied the score for San Fernando, 4-4, with a run-scoring double in the top of the inning.

Greg Venger had two hits, a stolen base and two runs batted in for Taft, which is 4-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

El Camino Real 5, Kennedy 2--Gavin Bible had four hits and drove in two runs, and sophomore right-hander Shaun Fishman scattered seven singles to lead visiting El Camino Real in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Mike Conn and Marvin Jones each had two hits for El Camino Real.

Birmingham 5, Cleveland 4--Fernando Centeno struck out seven and had two hits for the Braves, including a double and a two-run single in the third. Alberto Flores had a two-out, two-run single in the fourth.

The Cavaliers rallied for four runs in the fourth. Junior Brignac was three for three for Cleveland.

Sylmar 8, Van Nuys 4--Third baseman Chris Ruley and center fielder Mike Cervantes each had two hits to lead the Spartans (6-2, 4-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Van Nuys.

Albert Palma (1-0), making his first start of the season for Sylmar, pitched six innings and gave up one earned run. Van Nuys (1-9, 1-4) did not score after the second inning.

Monroe 20, North Hollywood 2--Sergio Lopez had two hits and five RBIs for the Vikings (3-7, 3-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Monroe in which North Hollywood made five errors.

Wayne Nix allowed two hits and struck out 16 for Monroe.

Reseda 10, Grant 9--Daniel Rothman had three hits and five RBIs and scored three runs for Grant (4-5, 3-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Grant.

Bobby Carrers had a double, two singles and four RBIs and scored two runs for the Regents (2-3, 2-3).

Poly 14, Canoga Park 6--Ray Montenegro had three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs, to lead the Parrots (6-3, 5-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Poly. Frankie Ozaeta added two hits and three RBIs and Jose Sandoval had three hits.

Hugo De La Torre (3-2) pitched six innings for Poly and gave up four hits and no earned runs.

Verdugo Hills 2, Lincoln 1--Dan Craig had two hits, including a game-winning RBI single in the sixth for the Dons (3-2, 3-2) in a Northern Conference game at Verdugo Hills.

Montclair Prep 12-13, Littlerock 8-2--Joe Cohen pitched a complete game in the opener and scattered 12 hits for the Mounties (7-3), while the Lobos left 11 runners.

In the second game, Cohen had a double and a home run and drove in three runs. James Jefferson of Littlerock had two hits in the second game that was called after five innings because of darkness.

Kilpatrick 17, Grace Brethren 6--Marc Nehme had three hits, including a two-run home run, and drove in three runs for host Grace Brethren (2-5) in a nonleague loss. Kevin Kennedy added a two-run home run for the Lancers.

SOFTBALL

Newbury Park 4, Westlake 1--Emily Webster hit a three-run home run and Kristi Fox pitched a three-hitter for the Panthers (6-2, 3-1) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake. Webster’s home run in the seventh inning came after the Warriors (8-3, 1-2) prolonged the inning with an error.

Thousand Oaks 7, Agoura 0--Jessie Davenport pitched a shutout with 13 strikeouts and one walk for the Lancers (6-3-1, 3-1) in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Davenport has given up only two hits in her last three games.

Camarillo 9, Simi Valley 1--Kortney Edge drove in three runs for visiting Camarillo (7-1, 4-0) in the Marmonte League rout.

Lori Tandy had two hits for Simi Valley (4-4, 2-2). Jefflyn Spahr had two hits and two RBIs for the Scorpions.

Royal 5, Channel Islands 3--Kim Whitehead’s two-out double drove in the go-ahead run for the Highlanders (4-7, 1-2) in the seventh inning of the Marmonte League game at Channel Islands. Cindy Canchola hit a home run for the Raiders (4-8, 0-4).

La Reina 25, Carpinteria 0--Jennifer Baltruzak pitched a perfect game and had three hits, including a home run, for the Regents (5-5, 1-0) in a Tri-Valley League game that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Shane Anderson hit two home runs and had four RBIs for La Reina.

Oak Park 6, St. Bonaventure 2--Shana Silverman had three hits and drove in a run, and Julie Jensen added a two-run double for visiting Oak Park (7-3, 1-0) in a Tri-Valley League game.

Alemany 1, Highland 0--Tiffany Cursio’s fourth-inning triple scored Alba Cano to give host Alemany (13-1) a nonleague victory.

Sophie Contreraz struck out five and scattered seven hits without giving up a walk.

Village Christian 5, L.A. Baptist 4--Sheri Girard hit a three-run home run with two out in the seventh inning to keep the score close for visiting L.A. Baptist in an Alpha League loss.

Jessie Leivo struck out seven and scattered six hits for Village Christian (7-3, 3-1). Jackie Aranda and Shandra Mahinay each had two hits and drove in a run.

Sylmar 19, Grant 2--The Spartans (6-4, 3-0) had 16 hits and 23 stolen bases in the Valley Pac-8 Conference rout. Angela Hernandez was three for three with four RBIs. Jennifer Brown struck out five and hit a three-run home run.

Reseda 11, Poly 1--Kristy Rebbeck had four hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs. Patricia Pena had a three-run double in a six-run sixth inning for Reseda (7-0, 3-0). Rosie Yeatts (4-0) had three hits and four RBIs.

Canoga Park 14, Van Nuys 2--Liz Vazquez and Janelle Balzer each had three hits for visiting Canoga Park (3-5, 2-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game. Vanessa Gonzalez (2-2) gave up one hit in 4 2/3 innings.

Monroe 10, North Hollywood 1--A two-run single by Anna Marquez highlighted a four-run first inning and Kelley Hall (4-3) struck out 12 and earned the victory for Monroe (5-3, 3-0).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Providence d. Pasadena Poly, 15-4, 18-16, 15-6--Jose Tano had 12 kills and nine digs and Ivan Miller had seven aces for the Pioneers (7-3) in a nonleague match at Pasadena Poly.

Campbell Hall d. Glendale Adventist, 15-7, 16-14, 15-13--Eric Hassan rallied the Vikings (7-1, 2-0) in an Alpha League match at Glendale Adventist.

With Campbell Hall trailing, 14-10, in the second game, Hassan served five consecutive aces. After a sideout by each team, the Vikings won the game, 16-14. Hassan finished with 25 kills and seven aces.

BOYS’ TRACK

Newbury Park 80, Camarillo 69, Westlake 18--Eleazar Hernandez was a triple winner in a Marmonte League triangular meet for host Camarillo, clocking 2 minutes 2 seconds for 800 meters, followed by 4:32.0 in the 1,600 meters and a 9:44.0 effort in the 3,200.

Buena 101, Santa Barbara 73, Oxnard 11--Buena’s Eric Stewart won both hurdles events and the triple jump to pace the Bulldogs (5-0, 4-0) in a Channel League tri-meet. Stewart ran a 15.8-second 110 hurdles and a 41.8-second 300 hurdles. He jumped 20 feet 1 inch in the triple jump.

Ventura 122, Dos Pueblos 41, Hueneme 23--Ventura’s Ramsey Jay, who has signed to run at USC, won the 200 and 400 meters and ran on the winning 400- and 1,600- relay teams in a Channel League tri-meet at Ventura.

Hueneme’s Ronney Jenkins had a wind-aided 23-foot 11-inch long jump.

Rio Mesa 94, San Marcos 33--Randy Hurt won both hurdles events, the triple jump and the long jump, leading the Spartans (2-3, 1-2) in a Channel League meet at Rio Mesa. Hurt had a 19-7 long jump and a 38-8 3/4 triple jump. He timed 16.0 and 46.3 in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

GIRLS’ TRACK

Ventura 97, Dos Pueblos 81, Hueneme 10--Ventura’s Nicole Campbell won the 100, 200 and 400 meters with times of 12.6, 27.0 and 1:00.7, leading the host Cougars in a Channel League tri-meet.

Rio Mesa 70, San Marcos 37--The Spartans’ Andrea Wasden won the 100, 200, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles in the Channel League dual meet at Rio Mesa. Wasden ran a 12.7-second 100 and a 26.1-second 200. She timed 14.9 in the 100 hurdles and 49.9 in the 300 hurdles.
