SOUTH-CENTRAL : Police Name Suspect in Slaying of Evangelist
Los Angeles police Thursday named the man wanted in the shooting of an evangelist who was killed by a stray bullet from gang gunfire near the Watts church where her father is the pastor.
The suspect in Monday afternoon’s shooting of Kara Bynum-Buster, 28, was identified as Jerry Mayfield, 29, of Los Angeles, who remains at large, said Los Angeles Police Detective Sal LaBarbera of the South Bureau homicide office.
“A lot of citizens called anonymously to tell us who the suspect was,†LaBarbera said.
“We have witnesses and we got a lot of response,†he said. “The community really came together on this. It was such a sad thing.â€
Bynum-Buster died at the scene near the Lighthouse Church of God in Christ, 1974 East 103rd St., where she was the director of the food distribution program.
Investigators believe the bullet that struck her was fired from the Jordan Downs housing project, more than 100 yards away, LaBarbera said.
