IRVINE : ‘Castle’ Owners Given Time to Meet Code

City officials extended today’s deadline for the correction of building and safety code violations at the castle-like home of Haym and Fern Ganish, saying they are satisfied with the progress made so far.

The city was poised to demolish the home two weeks ago when topless dance club owner Mark Bailey came to the rescue, providing $65,000 to bring the three-story, 24-room house up to code. The money was deposited in an escrow account and the family has moved out of the Kron Street home pending completion of work needed to bring the house up to code.

City Manager Paul O. Brady Jr. said the deadline has been extended because of rainy weather and because he is satisfied that a good-faith effort is being made.

“They’ve made sufficient progress, so we’re just taking it on a day-to-day basis at this point,†Brady said.
