United Way Extends Deadline for Funds

United Way is extending the deadline of its fund-raising campaign by one week to April 7, hoping to reach its $5.35-million goal in the final stretch.

Campaign Chairman David Harris said United Way has raised more than $5 million in donations and pledges, but is still about 5% short of its goal.

The campaign--which began in September--usually ends March 31, but Harris hopes to see a push in pledges during the first week in April.

“We are having a dinner on April 7 to announce the results and thank our supporters,†Harris said. “I thought, ‘Why not give people an extra week to get their money in?’ â€

Last year, the campaign raised about $5 million, short of the $5.3-million goal.

In recent years, the organization has lowered its expectations of contributions from the community, mainly due to the poor economy.

The goal was $5.8 million in 1992-93, but contributions were $500,000 short, prompting United Way to set goals of $5.1 million to $5.35 million for the past three fiscal years.

A committee will announce the allocations to the 60 United Way charities in Ventura County in June.
