Chocolate’s the Topic of Lecture

The Southwest Museum will host Janine Gasco, a UC Irvine professor who studies prehistoric Mesoamerica, for a lecture on the history of chocolate.
The free talk at 3 p.m. Saturday will explore the development of chocolate, which begins with the chocolate tree, a plant native to South America. Yellow flowers on old branches are succeeded by fleshy yellow pods containing numerous seeds, which when dried and partly fermented become cacao , or cocoa.
The Southwest Museum is at 234 Museum Drive and is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.
