Kuwait Oil Workers Suspend Strike: Kuwaiti oil workers suspended their 7-day-old strike in exchange for a government pledge to consider demands for promotions and pay raises, a union spokesman said. Ismail Kandari of the union’s board of directors said the agreement was reached during a meeting between labor leaders and Oil Minister Abdul-Mohsen Madaj. About 1,200 workers at the state-run Kuwait Oil Co. walked off the job last Saturday, complaining that they have not been promoted in more than 10 years and some have not gotten raises in 18 years. Kuwait produces 2 million barrels of oil per day. There have been conflicting reports over whether the strike disrupted production. According to union figures, 1,200 workers at the state-run Kuwait Oil Co. had been on strike, causing disruptions in output and a decline in quality.
