PREP ROUNDUP : Brea Olinda Defeats Peninsula in Gymnastics
Senior Erica Castillo won all-around to help Brea Olinda defeat Palos Verdes Peninsula 169.3-155.9 in a girls’ gymnastics meet at Brea Olinda.
Castillo won the bars and beam, and tied with freshman teammate Tennli Ulicny on the floor exercises. Ulicny also won the vault.
In nonleague golf:
Rancho Alamitos 217, Artesia 259--Greg Balliet shot a par 35 at Willowick to medal and set a school record for the lowest score. Balliet broke his record of 37, which he shot last year.
In nonleague girls’ swimming:
El Modena 93, Troy 61--Sophomore Christina Vasconcellos and Jessica Powell won all their individual events and both competed in two winning relays for host El Modena (4-0). Vasconcellos won the 500 freestyle (5:54.63) and the 100 backstroke (1:09.56) and Powell swept in the 50 (25.67) and 100 freestyle (55.61).
Irvine 109, Mission Viejo 61--Irvine, ranked second in the county, won all the relays. Irvine’s Molly Zak won two events, the 100 butterfly (1:01.3) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.4). Christina Rhee and Cheryl Murphy were double winners for Mission Viejo (0-1). Irvine is 3-0.
In nonleague boys’ tennis:
Foothill 10, La Quinta 8--Ryan Thompson swept his singles sets without giving up a point and Rob Claus and Lance Stern won their doubles sets 6-1, 6-0, 6-2 for third-ranked Foothill (3-1). Thompson is undefeated this season.
Santa Margarita 9, Aliso Niguel 9 (Santa Margarita wins on games 90-84)--Down 9-7, the Eagles (3-2) won their final two sets for the victory. Kiarash Tofigh won his final set over Brian Mangino, 6-4, and Cody Shedd clinched the victory by defeating Burt Gonzell, 6-4.
In the Santa Ana city boys’ track meet:
Century 103, Saddleback 56, Santa Ana Valley 48, Santa Ana 40--Robert Villagas won the long jump with a distance of 20-3 and the pole vault with a height of 12-0 for first-place Century.
In nonleague boys’ track and field:
Dana Hills 80, Laguna Hills 56--Bryan Harrison won the 100-meter dash in 10.7 and the 200 in 22.5 and Randy Hein won the shotput with a distance of 46-11 1/4 and the discus with 159 for Dana Hills (2-0).
