LOS ANGELES : Hiring of Coordinator for Community Policing Urged
A Los Angeles City Council committee, anxious to push the police reform agenda along, called Monday for hiring a coordinator to oversee community policing efforts.
In 1991, the Christopher Commission recommended adopting the alternative policing model, which treats communities as partners in fighting crime. The panel said the new approach would help improve police relations with inner-city residents and minority groups.
But since 1993, elected officials and community leaders have been complaining about the slow progress in implementing the reforms.
Pending council approval, the Police Commission will begin the search for a coordinator.
Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas said he wants the coordinator to create a network of neighborhood leaders to help with community policing programs.
