1995 BOYS’ TENNIS: PREVIEW : SIX TEAMS TO WATCH : VILLA PARK
Coach: Dave Colville (third year).
1994: 14-5, 6-4 in the Century League. Lost to Mission Viejo in the first round of the Division I playoffs.
Key returners: Steve Berkus, doubles, Sr.; B.K. Chang, No. 2 singles, So.; Ryan Hollis, No. 1 singles, Century League MVP, reached round of 16 in section individuals last year, second-team Times All-County, Sr.; Bryan Kim, doubles, Sr.; Jimmy Simpson, doubles, Sr.; Chad Smith, No. 3 singles, reached round of 16 individual doubles with Chang last year; Eric Wu, doubles, Jr.
Key newcomers: Jeremy Shaw, doubles, Fr.; Tyson Thurston, doubles, Fr.
Outlook: Colville has a solid top three in Hollis, Chang and Smith. Hollis, who is being heavily recruited by San Diego, Nevada Las Vegas and Boise State, figures to be one of the county’s better singles players. Chang and Smith, excellent doubles players, give Colville flexibility in tough matches. If Colville can build a couple solid doubles teams with his two freshmen, Villa Park could go a long way in its first year of Division II competition.
